It’s year 2009. Each and every company or individual is aware of the fact that design is the matter of reputation and marketing position. I dare to say design makes at least 50% of one’s success. Chances to get a job after interview are greater if you was wearing designer clothes, well designed bottle of milk will attract more buyers, etc. – example list may become quite long.
In this article I’ll be focused on web design. Web design which didn’t change since Big Bang of the internet…

Keep Earth Beautiful.org

Visit LINK
Any comment regarding design would be…whatever. But if you take a look at the content and idea behind this ugly wrapper all you can say is: wow, that’s just great! Honestly spoken it has big potential to become ‘green’ portal.
I wasn’t able to find any impressum nor get an info on when this site has been established but I guess it was long before designers were able to take a look how other, similar websites look like.

Visual Arts League

Visit LINK
First thing I did upon visit to this web site was Ctrl + U. Source code looks like a graveyard. HTML Tidy has returned 52 errors and 132 warnings after validation which is not so bad; I didn’t mention the number of warnings for the previous site which was equal to 454. Somehow I have a feeling all these people who made this site are already retired. Don’t forget to visit Oldswimmer’s blog made on WordPress. In spite of the fact there are many free WP themes around an author tends to keep the thread of screw-it-up.

Haven Works

Visit LINK
Believe it or not this one has a huge list of 2106 warnings! Just take a look at navigation, layout, usability… I guess nothing has been changed since 1998 – as stated in copyright. But that’s not all! Haven Works offers web design service and portfolio can be seen here. Not sure whether the service is still active (copyright update 2006) but I wonder how much something like that could cost.
PS: Don’t forget to subscribe to Haven Works RSS!

Martinsburg Police Department

Visit LINK
‘Don’t forget to bookmark us! (CTRL-D)’, ‘Is a sexual offender living near you. Click here to find out’, ‘Does your child need a booster seat Click Here to find out’…Home page rocks! Take a look at the ‘Crime Stats’ link from the left navigation. This page starts with the police warning reading ‘POLICE LINE – DO NOT CROSS’. Although this web site would be better positioned in funniest site competition I decided to leave it in this article; it has all the attributes required to be presented as an ugly one.

UMX Lanyards

Visit LINK
As I continue to seek for ugly websites the list becomes bigger. It’s quite hard to pick the ugliest among bunch of ugly ones. My coffee mug is empty so this is another reason to give it up. I didn’t want to offend anybody with this article so here is a BIG apologize to those who feel offended. Actually it’s nice to see on living examples how web design has evolved in past 10 years. All the modern design web sites will probably become funny in next 10 years…and only those not aware of design importance will find its place on the future list of ugliest.
